What is the difference between a Kensington vs Noble lock / slot?
Dell XPS, Inspiron, Latitude & Chromebook laptops probably have a Noble Wedge slot which is different to the old T-bar / Kensington slot.
We will explain what the difference is between a Kensington T-bar slot and a Noble Wedge slot and the cable solutions that fit.
You have bought a new laptop and you need to buy a security cable: you may be asking yourself what type of security slot does your computer have: a Noble / Wedge slot or a Kensington / T-bar slot? What is the difference between a Kensington vs Noble lock? What is a Noble Wedge slot? Read on.
The Noble slot – Noble Wedge
With the advancement of smaller CPUs and batteries, laptops and tablets are seeing their physical design become thinner to the extent that increasingly the traditional Kensington / T-bar slot is being omitted. The Noble Wedge lock system improves on legacy locks by decreasing the footprint needed for the security slot built into the laptop or tablet device. Thus this is allowing manufacturers to continue to incorporate a security slot into their designs. Noble has achieved this with no compromise on strength with its Wedge lock system.
The T-bar / Kensington slot
For over 20 years PC manufacturers have been incorporating a classic T-bar slot (also known as a Kensington slot) into their Laptops. Most office workers are likely at some point to have used a T-bar compatible cable lock. However, due to size constraints of the T-bar design manufacturers are frequently omitting a security slot from their design: Apple laptops is an example of hardware that no longer carries a security slot (there is a solution for this which we will discuss later).
No security slot. What then?
As mentioned earlier, some manufacturers like Apple with their MacBook range have not included a security slot in the design. This poses a problem when your employer requires you to secure your laptop (or you intend to work in a public area). However, a number of manufacturers have developed adapters that you fix on to the laptop (or tablet) which add the security slot.
– Apple laptops can use adapters from both Compulocks (Ledge solution) and Noblelocks (MBPR15 or 13), you can see the Apple range through this link. Locking solutions for iMac, Apple TV, MacBook Pro & Air. Security solutions also for the Apple tablets.
